“WE ARE EXCITED TO INCITE IN THE AUDIENCE THE URGE TO RECONSIDER THEMSELVES, THEIR WORLD, AND THE WORLDS BEYOND THEIR OWN”
When the late Mexican philosopher José Vasconcelos theorized in 1929 that the world would one day consist of a “fifth race”—La Raza Cósmica—what he meant was that the human spirt could transcend past notions of segregated race and nationality. The collective spirit, bridged together by love and a universal harmony, was enough to blend all bloodlines and launch humanity into a future civilization.
With 80-years past, the present landscape isn’t too far off in ideology from his theories. Technology alone has brought the world from isolated land masses to streams of constant human consciousness, with communication and global connectivity at our fingertips. Together’s Art Board member and experimental curator, Maggie Cavallo, became inspired by these notions when researching audio/visual works of appropriation. The work of four Boston and New York-based artists—Vela Phelan, D’hana Perry, BATHAUS, and Bobby Andres—contextualize the “remix”: using found footage, sampled sounds and chopped editing to sculpt new works, fusing recycled content with the artists’ own originality and self-identity. Looking towards the cosmos, or the 5th dimension, Cavallo created A New Cosmix Mix: Now in 5D! to be presented at Boston’s Museum of Science Charles Hayden Planetarium, kicking off Together on Sunday, May 12th.
“This event will highlight the cosmic exchange common in our community that takes places between live artists,” explains Cavallo. “This exchange disregards the pedantic nature of traditional learning and instead often takes place in nightclubs and alternative gallery spaces, offering the audience a temporary, yet transcendental experience through art, sound and new technologies.”
Two 90-minute performances will feature extended solo-showcases, book-ended by mash-up’s of new sounds and visual content created by the artists working organically in-collaboration. The ability for four socially and culturally diverse artists to mingle and match reflects a lot of what Vasconcelos had outlined: our thought place in the known universe may be uprooted once we understand what it feels like to exist in unison, and finding the inspiration to share this knowledge with others is all that separates us from existing wholly together.
HEXbeam, a project of Boston-based artist, Vela Phelan is an experiment in live video. The video is often glitchy, saturated and unrythmic creating a complex secret pattern for him and the viewers to travel in. Phelan is an active member of the New England art community through his collaborations with Jeff Huckleberry as J V, as a member of the sound-art/performance group GangClanMafia and as a solo action artist and VJ. Vela has been actively creating since 1994 both nationally, internationally and in the World Wide Web. He believes in magnifying the energy of objects, sounds, video and actions while blending subconscious with spirit and allowing the unknown to present itself. Vela seeks to transform and alter modern and ancient energies into a new paradigm by creating ritual and giving life to mundane objects that are beautified through ceremony.
BATHAUS is contemporary surrealism through sound. An inherent interest in the macabre and mysticism, combined with learned practices of prayer and ritual are nourished by distorting reality in samples, synths and video. BATHAUS works skillfully within the history of moving images, mining for scenes that deserve to be seen again and teasing out their thematic undercurrents. With recent tracks inspired by monk choirs and their Gregorian chants, BATHAUS revisions cathedral sound. D’HANA PERRY’s documentary audio video project, LOOSE, explores liminal identity construction, gender/racial performance and self-expression. Perry is a DJ, event creator and recipient of an MFA in Media Art from Emerson College. In May 2012, Perry appeared on the cover of the Boston Phoenix’s Queer Issue with their DJ partner, Rizzla, for their pioneering work in creating “exhilic” spaces via nightlife culture. Their mixtapes have also garnered attention from Fader Magazine and other notable online publications. Perry has worked with rising stars in future bass music and underground queer culture including: Mykki Blanco, Jubilee, NGUZUNGUZU, Todd Edwards, Total Freedom, LIL’ INTERNET, Robyn, Kim Ann Foxman, M.E.N., Kingdom, Venus X, Physical Therapy, Original Plumbing Magazine, Massacooramaan, and Le1f.
BOBBY ANDRES’ video-performance project Dance for Rhythm Demagogues, excavates the semiotics of sound used in introductory segments for network news via the comedic movement of the dancing body in tandem with manipulated video and audio. During their time at SMFA, Bobby explored how the dancing body could transform one’s experience of this musical-aesthetic content that most often remains peripheral in relation to the paramount content. Rhythm Demagogues questions the guise of aesthetic minutiae as “background” and engages with blind spots of modern media, in particular the overwhelming power that framing devices possess in the creation of consensus through emotional synchronization. This ongoing project continues to investigate the transformative powers that manifest through queer subversions of rhythomolgies found within a Western aesthetic of progress.
YASSY GOLDIE knows that basic comforts could be easily met for all humans on planet, if not for imbalanced resources created by pain and greedy need for more, greed of Yeti. Yeti find collective expression in economic structures of earth world, in disguises of huge corporations, the erotic entities that compete with other Yeti$ for more bling. Yeti only blind aim is profit by size of car. Yeti pursue aim with absolute ruthlessness exercising for peace. Nature, Animals, People, Yeti, even Yeti own employees, and Golden Jasmine Yeti Dancers are no more than digits on balance sheet, lifeless objects used, then discarded in trash can.
