2013 – Art Department (CAN)

Art Department Together 2013

Much like disco, from which it sprang, house music seems forever to be fighting rumors of its own collapse, and – again like disco – those rumors prove time and again to be entirely unfounded. Through the decades, house music has changed forms and spun outward into dozens of sub-genres: progressive-house, tech-house, hip-house, etc. Like any genre, though, house music needs innovators to keep things sounding fresh and new. Toronto’s Art Department, between 2012’s Social Experiment and the slew of EPs and singles they released that same year, are proving themselves as a group ready to carry the house music torch into 2013.

In part, Art Department’s success can be attributed to patience, a fundamental of house music in its classic form. Their tracks, like their house predecessors, are long, evolving affairs that introduce new, catchy ideas only when necessary, to maximize the amount of time you spend moving your body. In another part, it comes down to smart, modern choices and a sense of fun. Though the ideas stay for a long while, they’re constantly playing with panning effects, delays, and filters, to keep things moving. And having Seth Troxler on a track always makes things a little more fun.

Clearly a group to watch, Art Department only has one album and already has the world’s attention. Be there when they break down Bijou.

"The festival’s seventh year was its best yet… Every day of the week there was at least one—and often several—things to look forward to."

"The core notion of the festival … isn’t just to provide a good time, but to illustrate the fertile mix of art and technology intrinsic to current-day Boston."

"The sixth edition of Together ... was a reminder of how much Boston still has to offer for the tribes of dance music fans who live here ... Despite its size, Together pulled off an impressive range of sounds from across the electronic spectrum."
