Hailing from the Netherlands, Heleen is a visual artist in every sense. Covering everything from film to installations and beyond, she has proven again and again to be in a league of her own when it comes to stimulating both the senses and the minds of her audience.
Her career took off immediately after graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam in 2008, where her film work was recognized at Best Graduates Show at the prestigious Ron Mandos Art Gallery. However, it was her desire to be multi-faceted that motivated her to pursue a career as a VJ. She was quickly recruited to perform at various Dutch venues and festivals like Melkweg, Paradiso, Groninger Museum, NDSM werf and Awakening. Throughout her career, she’s also provided visuals for a variety of bands and individual musicians, and currently holds a residency with Club TrouwAmsterdam.
For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of a VJ, it stands for video jockey. Essentially, they provide visuals to complement the sounds being provided by the DJ.
One thing that makes Heleen so unique is that she shoots all of the video for her VJ performances, which makes it a completely unique experience. Additionally, while many VJs focus on 3D modeling and computer generated images, Heleen primarily uses film creating a less artificial feeling atmosphere.
Her visuals have a unique style by creating a disturbing yet appealing atmosphere, where industrial overtones interact with the dark side of nature.
So what exactly should you expect when Heleen takes over the Middlesex Lounge? Even we can’t say. We do know that it will be something completely unique, and that it will go hand in hand with the music of Martyn, Tom Trago, Florinsz Janvier and Cursed P. Prepare to experience Middlesex like you’ve never experienced it before.
