Spring is finally here! The sun is out full force and now is the time to soak up that Vitamin D we have all been lacking over the winter. What better way to celebrate the long-awaited change of seasons than with a dance party along the Charles? On Sunday, May 19, Together hosts the return of Cambridge’s legendary outdoor dance party Dancing on the Charles.
DOTC dates back to the Spring of 2007, created as a club night alternative by local favorites Eli and Charlie of Soul Clap, Randy Deshaies of Re:Set Wednesdays at the Phoenix Landing, and Sergio Santos. The party ran for three summers at the American Legion Marsh Post in Cambridge, quickly growing in popularity from 200 to 800 partygoers. DOTC featured both local and touring DJs, including DJ Harvey, Nico Jaar, Justin Martin, Pete Moss, and Sleazy McQueen.
DOTC ended its run in 2009 after permit troubles with the city and Soul Clap’s decision to focus their energy on making music and touring (a move that most certainly paid off). Wishing to continue the success of the outdoor parties, the crew brought back the idea in a new format, hosting several Dancing on the Block parties in Kendall Square from 2010 to 2012.
Now, in 2013, the stars have aligned for the return of the original Dancing on the Charles party. The whole crew is back in Cambridge and is partnering with Together for a Crew Love BBQ at a new location in Central Square, featuring live performances from No Regular Play and Slow Hands + Tanner Ross, plus Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap, and DJ Kon.
Though we may not have palm trees, check out these videos of No Regular Play and Slow Hands + Tanner Ross playing the Crew Love parties at this year’s BPM Festival for an idea of what to expect.
For even more goodies to get you excited for this party, Soul Clap is releasing a DOTC-themed compilation featuring some of our fine city’s best talent in dance music. It will be released digitally on May 13, but you can get the vinyl sampler now.
There is simply no better way to close out the Together Festival than with dope beats, BBQ, and sunshine, so save up your energy! DOTC will be held on Sunday, May 19 from 2:00-8:00 pm, rain or shine. The location is very near Central Square in a grass-lined courtyard. The event is 21+ and there are no backpacks allowed. Grab tickets here!
